Job overview

As an Emergency Department Assistant at Queen’s Medical Centre (working in adults and paediatrics), you can make all the difference!

You’ll be a key part of a team that makes sure patients and their relatives are reassured; the medical staff who treat them have the support and resources they need, to maintain a working department and help the staff do the best job they can.

It’s a big responsibility, and it’s as rewarding as it is challenging in one of the biggest Emergency departments in Europe.

Please note successful candidates will need to be able to commit to 6 weeks mandatory training on commencement in the post even if wanting part time hours

Main duties of the job

The job will see you combine three roles: reception duties, transfer of patients and a nursing support and clinical nursing.

The reception role involves, after extensive training: working on various hospital and national computer systems, inputting data accurately and at speed, maintaining accurate electronic and paper records, dealing professionally with telephone enquires both internal and external, maintaining a high level of patient confidentiality. A high level of customer care is required for this role. In addition, you’ll make sure the Department itself is looked-after by reporting equipment faults, ordering supplies and stationery and generally keeping the place tidy.

Transfer of patients and a nursing support role means you’ll be patients’ first point of contact. You will be there to help and advice throughout their time in the Emergency Department by: making drinks, assisting with meals, escorting patients to the toilet and arranging transport (home if necessary). The Transfer role requires the candidate to have both upper and lower body physical strength. An interest in physical activities would be a distinct benefit in this fast moving environment.

The clinical nursing aspect of the role involves assisting nursing staff with the basic nursing observations, oxygen therapy and resuscitation, and, in time, you’ll undertake more training for more advanced roles. This involves working in the ED Majors unit, Resus, Paediatrics, & ED urgent treatment unit.

Working for our organisation

This is a role that calls for a ‘people person’ with a very well organised approach. You’ll need a good basic education and be able to speak and write English well, be able to input data quickly and accurately, but more than that, you will need to be cheerful, pleasant and patient.

Reliability is extremely important, as is the flexibility to work nights, weekends and bank holidays (shifts are on a rota basis, 24/7).

This post could also expose you to distressing issues and incidents. In all aspects, full initial and ongoing training will be available to you.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

In addition to the below summary, you’ll need to familiarise yourself with full Job Description and Person Specification documents attached to this advert.
